Wyoming Valley Health Care System was born of the 1992 merger of our founding hospitals - Wilkes-Barre General Hospital and Nesbitt Memorial Hospital. In continuing efforts to consolidate services and capitalize on the strengths of both founding organizations, all acute care services at Nesbitt were relocated to expanded and renovated facilities at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital in autumn of 2001. This transfer of services means that Wilkes-Barre General Hospital now provides - in one centralized site - improved access and availability of quality, comprehensive, affordable health care.
Today, Wilkes-Barre General Hospital is Northeastern Pennsylvania's largest and most comprehensive
medical center. It includes:
- A medical staff of over 400 physicians
- 412 total licensed beds (including 54 telemetry beds)
- 24-hour emergency care, including Level II Emergency Department
and poison control
- Recognized excellence in heart and vascular care, women's and
children's services, cancer care, orthopaedic care and wide ranging
medical and surgical specialities
In addition to offering the finest technology and most advanced,
compassionate and accessible care, our System also has proud
traditions of excellence in both community and professional education.
For instance, to help alleviate the nursing shortage and bring highly educated nurses to bedsides of patients, Wyoming Valley Health Care System has developed the Nursing Sponsorship Program. Through agreements with local nursing schools, Wyoming Valley Health Care System pays for the tuition, books and other education-related costs for nursing students in exchange for the students promise to work for our System one year for each year of sponsorship. To learn more about the Nursing Sponsorship Program, please contact Human Resources at 570-552-8804.
In addition, Wyoming Valley Health Care System offers a number of professional education opportunities through Wilkes-Barre General Hospital's Schools
of Nuclear Medicine Technology, Nurse
Anesthesia, Radiography and Diagnostic
Medical Sonography.
In 2002, Nesbitt Memorial Medical Center
(as the former Nesbitt Memorial Hospital is now known) became
the location of Wyoming Valley Health Care System's extensive array
of Behaviorial Health Services. The primary services offered at
Nesbitt Memorial Medical Center include: First Hospital Wyoming
Valley, our inpatient mental health facility; CHOICES, which provides
inpatient and outpatient substance abuse rehabilitation; Advanced
Psychological and Counseling Services, which offers outpatient counseling
for children, adolescents and adults; and the Family Enhancement
Program, providing nurturing skills and education to first time
parents.
The Nesbitt site also houses our Family Care Center, which offers
primary care to thousands of area individuals and families, regardless
of background or income levels. Nesbitt Memorial Medical Center
also is home to our Wyoming Valley Family Practice Residency Program,
which provides training to physician residents.
