Overview
Established in 1970, Wyoming Valley Health Care System/University of Scranton School of Nurse Anesthesia is a 25-month program which received a full 10-year accreditation in 2002 by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA). In 1999, an affiliation was formed with University of Scranton to offer a Master of Science Degree with a Major in Nursing. The program boasts a 93 percent passing rate for first time takers of the Certification Exam and a 93 percent passing rate for second time takers.

The School of Anesthesia provides anesthesia theory along with clinical practice early in the program. Our students graduate with approximately 700 cases and over 1200 hours of clinical practice. In addition, they acquire valuable experience administering general, regional and monitored anesthesia care to patients of all ages.

During the course of this comprehensive program, students benefit from a variety of clinical experiences at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital and at a number of nearby clinical sites. Specifically, they learn how to provide anesthesia to a broad patient population, including acutely ill neurologic, cardiac, vascular, thoracic, obstetric, pediatric and general surgery patients..

Off-site clinical facilities providing hands-on education include: Community Medical Center in Scranton, Geisinger Hospital in Danville, Geisinger Wyoming Valley in Wilkes-Barre, Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown and Bethlehem, Fairgrounds Surgical Center in Allentown, Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg, Pottsville Hospital in Pottsville, Robert Packer Hospital/Guthrie Clinic in Sayre, Shamokin Area Community Hospital in Coal Township and Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre. The on-site main campus for the School of Nurse Anesthesia is here at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
